JOB DESCRIPTION - RESEARCH MANAGER (HEALTH SYSTEMS AND NUTRITION)
Position: Research Manager (Health systems and Nutrition)
Education: Master’s degree in healthcare administration and management, public health, epidemiology, health policy, or other allied fields

NEERMAN is a niche research firm that conducts rigorous impact evaluations in the water-sanitation, public health, and energy sectors. We also provide allied services such as M&E system development and policy research. Our main clients are leading international organizations such as World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and UNICEF. NEERMAN also conducts collaborative research with University of California, Berkeley and University of California, San Francisco. Our main office is in Mumbai and a branch office is in New Delhi.

We seek to hire a full-time mid-level Research Manager for our Health Systems and Nutrition Research projects in maternal and child health, immunization, health systems, and nutrition fields. The responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to, the following -
Study design and preparatory tasks: support in conceptual study design using mixed methods, proposal development, preparation of tools (questionnaires, guides, CAPI Apps, etc.), developing sampling plan, planning study activities and timelines
Managing field surveys: developing scope of work for field survey agencies, budget preparation, piloting, field training, field supervision, preparation of data quality and field status tables using STATA, coordination with field managers, processing and cleaning of data in STATA, supervising data processing team, etc.
Analysis and reporting: Conducting basic cross tabulation and bivariate analysis (in STATA), preparing well written and insightful reports, tables-graphs from data/results and good quality slide decks, presenting research findings in workshops
Project management: developing project implementation plan and timelines, assigning roles/responsibilities, tracking progress, anticipate-identify-address bottlenecks or risks to the study, managing IRB approvals, tracking and managing deliverables to funders / from partners, tracking time and budget on projects
Partner Management: Timely, clean and closed-loop communication with research and field partners, team building and motivation, tracking tasks/deliverables by partners, helping them in their tasks, participating in internal NEERMAN training sessions and strategic initiatives
Travel: Field surveys will require 10-15 days of continuous stay for training and initial supervision; expect 2-3 projects in a year. Other travels of 1-5 days throughout the year for pilots, field supervision, presentations, scoping visits, meetings, etc.
Work hours: 5-day work week, but field work can happen on weekends/holidays. Occasional work on time critical tasks on weekends is expected. We prefer fixed work hours from 09.30am to 06.30pm for the entire team.
Expected qualifications and skills
Qualifications: At least a Master’s degree in healthcare administration and management, public health, epidemiology, health policy, or other allied fields. Candidates from high ranking international and national universities will be given a preference.
Experience: Candidates should be well versed with Indian urban and rural health systems (structure, programmes, data, MIS, current issues, etc.). Should have good knowledge and exposure to various research methods especially those used in impact evaluations, survey research and health systems assessment in public health, nutrition and allied fields. Candidate should have at least 3 years of survey research experience in designing, managing and analysing surveys (n > 2000) in nutrition and maternal and child health fields.
Technical skills: Preferred technical skills include the ability to develop CAPI Apps on ODK platform, STATA for data processing and analysis, qualitative research skills. While dedicated support teams for field management, CAPI development, data processing, etc. are available, a Research Manager is expected to be skilled in these tasks if such need arises
Soft skills: The ideal candidate would be able to work well in teams, have good interpersonal skills, be self-driven, honest, diligent and hard-working, and have a high sense of responsibility and accountability
Language proficiency: High proficiency in oral and written English
This position is advertised for Mumbai or New Delhi, but Delhi-based candidates must first complete a 3-months training-cum- orientation in Mumbai.
Salary and Benefits
Compensation will be competitive and will depend on academic qualifications, relevant experience, and technical and interpersonal skills.
Suggestive CTC range: Rs. 7,00,000 – Rs. 12,00,000. For suitable candidates, this range can be reasonably exceeded according to their current salary/competing job offers.
Health insurance, performance-linked bonuses, gratuity, public holidays, paid Personal Time Off (PTO), unpaid PTO, compensatory PTO, reimbursement of professional development expenses, open source publication and conference fee support, and emergency loans. Some benefits are a part of the CTC and others are not. Benefits are applicable after the probation period (if applicable) and a few are applicable after completion of 1 year.
Two years (probation period of 3 months may be applicable) and renewable for a longer period depending on performance.
